Members of FCC-D will be joining a larger group of volunetter from the North Texas Area as we go to Moore, Oklahoma, on June 24th to serve a big BBQ lunch for the workers, volunteers, and residents who are working in the aftermath of the recent tornados.
Pastor John tell us "I’m going behind bars for good. There is a warrant out for my arrest and on June 27th I will be taken to jail…but it is for a good cause – MDA! My bail money will help fund research for unlocking a cure for muscular dystrophy and for sending kids to an MDA summer camp. So, I hope that you remember when you called me to buy raffle tickets, Girl Scout cookies, wrapping paper and such from you? Well, now I need your help." I will be placing calls but you can donate now via the wonders of the internet. Click Here to go to Pastor Burton's MDA web page for more information and/or to make a donation! Thank you for any help you can give to the MDA cause!
As presented on CNN, the following is a list of the 50 worst charities as determined by looking at the last 10 years of available Federal tax filings and looking at how much money was spent soliciting money and how much money was actually spent on the cause that the charity exists to work for. Click here to see a pdf of the entire list. Some of them ghave not dispersed anything at all except for staff salaries and to pay solicitors!! Don't send you money to groups that don't do what they promise to do!!!
Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Moore, Oklahoma. The devastation there is something like one would expect at Hiroshima or Nagasaki after the nuclear bombs. We are working on a plan to collect donations but until then we ask you to pray for the victims, the survivors, the grieving families, those who lost home and pets, and all those who have rushed to help!
On April 28, 2013, with lots of family and friends in attendance, the Elders of First Christian Church gathered around Judd, installed him as our newest Elder Emeritus, and laid hands on him and prayed for God to bless him. After the worship service was over there was a big luncheon in the Fellowship Hall with a delightful program in which many pictures and many stories were told about Judd. A great time was had by all!
This has been a trying week for our country, for us. In the midst of it all we pray for those who were killed or maimed, all their loved ones, all the E.M.T.s, police, firemen and other first responders, as well as for our country. We pray for justice but we also pray to regain the sense of peace that has been stolen from us. The following is a psalm, inspired by and written in the style of the 23rd Psalm, that Pastor John Burton offered as a part of the sermon on April 21, 2013 (which you can find in the sermons page).
A Psalm Of Comfort and Hope
The Lord is my rescuer
With him I shall not fear,
Out of violence and chaos he pulls me,
Out of harm’s way he sends me.
He restores my battered spirits.
He leads me to safety,
For his name’s sake.
When enemies and disasters assail me
He is with me.
His E.M.T.s and First Responders,
They shall find me.
He prepares for me emergency medical care,
Even within sight of the disaster.
He anoints my head with cool, clean water
And sends me food and shelter.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life,
And no matter where my body may sleep,
My heart shall dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.

FCC-D gladly hosted the Denton Chapter of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls (North Texas Assembly #383) for worship on April 7th. These young ladies were a delight and were fine representatives of both the Rainbow Girls and their families!
The Rainbow Girls are affiliated with Masonic lodges and Eastern Star. It is not a religion, cult or secret order. It is open to all girls 11-20 and is an environment where girls gain self-confidence and self-respect. It teaches leadership skills, service to community and respect for all. Fun activities and lifelong friendships are made. Denton's chapter is called and meets at the Masonic Lodge at 316 W. Highland on the 2nd and 4th Sat. of each month at 4 p.m. The assembly is sponsored by Denton's Stanfield Masonic Lodge.
Easter started off with threats of rain (which just missed us) but turned into a spectacular day long before the Sun peeked through the clouds. Our Early Easter Service ended up being held indoors since the thunderstorms was only a mile north of us but attendance was almost more than we could handle - certainly more than we had planned for and almost triple last year's attendance. Special music was provided by Russell Robertson! After that we had a full Easter breakfast served by the men of our church. Those guys can really cook! Our main Easter worship service (at 10:50) was well attended, included outstanding special music with Alyssa Taylor, the Sanctuary Choir and a string quartet, the baptism of Tally Hicks, and an exceptional sermon by Pastor John Burton -- click here to read the sermon.
On this Sunday, April 21, 2013 - Palm Sunday, Pastor John Burton will preach on "The Shepherd's Psalm" from the 23rd Psalm. Our church is handicapped accessible. We have paid, professional nursery staff. We serve communion every Sunday and anyone who wishes to partake will be served -- the same goes for the offering plates! Services begin at 10:50 and are usually over right at noon, plus or minus 10 minutes. We invite you to join us for worship and fellowship in Christ's name!
