Advent

ChristmasCantataFromBalcony2010_300w.JPGHanging of the Greens

This service, held on the first Sunday of Advent (usually end of November or early in December) sets the stage for the entire Advent season. During this service we decorate our sanctuary and explain the meaning behind all the decorations!

Christmas Music Sunday

Usually on the third Sunday of Advent (in December) our choir presents either a Christmas cantata or special Christmas music that takes the place of the morning sermon.

Christmas

Christmas Eve Services

Our church has two Christmas Eve services. The early service is at 6:00 p.m. and is designed to be "child-friendly" and includes a telling of the Christmas story, with children portraying the characters. If you love to sing Christmas carols this would be the service for you! The late service, at 11:00 p.m., is designed to feature great "classical" Christmas music. Communion is served to all who desire it at both services.

Lent

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday is what we call the first day of the season of Lent, which is the season of preparation for Easter. Lent is a time of emphasizing spiritual disciplines. Many people "take on" disciplines such as: daily Bible reading, visiting the sick, making a weekly donation to feed the poor equivalent to what they spent on eating out that week, or daily prayers. Many also "give up" things that they find to be harmful in their lives, such as cigarettes, fat, driving above the speed limit, or profanity. So Ash Wednesday is when we blow the starter's whistle to begin our new spiritual disciplines for the long run to Easter.

Maundy Thursday Service

Maundy Thursday is what we call the Thursday before Easter – the day on which Jesus instituted the Last Supper. We and the members of Trinity Presbyterian Church share this service and rotate who hosts it. First Christian Church traditionally hosts in odd numbered years...2011, 2013, 2015, etc. with Trinity Presbyterian hosting in the even numbered years. In this service communion is shared with all who desire to take part.

Easter

EasterEarlyWorship2010_300w.JPGEaster Sunday is the holiest day of the Christian year, marking the day on which Jesus rose from the dead. Our schedule can change, year to year, but normally we have an early service (pictured here) and then our main service at 10:50 a.m. We often baptized new members during the main Easter service.

Miscellaneous Events

Fall Follies

FallFollies2010_Spartans_300w.JPGOur Fall Follies will take place every year on a Sunday evening in October.  We start with dinner, of course, but the evening's entertainment is an eclectice presentation of songs, readings, and dramas presented by members of the congregation.  It gets pretty wild and you never know who will have a you-tube moment!

The Valentine Dinner

The men of First Christian hold an annual Valentine Dinner for the church. Traditionally it takes place on the Saturday before Valentine's Day. This is one of the few events that requires and RSVP. The dinner has in the past featured a filet mignon with members making a free will offering for their dinner. There is always plenty of outstanding music. .

The Souper Bowl of Caring Chili Cook-off

DixieChicksChili2010_300w.JPGThe Souper Bowl of Caring utilizes Super Bowl weekend to mobilize young people to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Our youth, along with help from our Youth Ministry Council, host an annual Chili Cook-off with all proceeds given to Our Daily Bread (our local community soup kitchen). In addition to the chili cook-off, canned and non-perishable food items are also collected and given to the Denton Community Food Center. Anyone with a great chili recipe is encouraged to participate. Prizes are awarded for Best Overall Chili and Best Decoration. This is a chili tasting good time in support of our youth and their efforts.
