The outreach committee has decided that we would like to have a new project for this calendar year. We have chosen to raise money for a soft room at our local police station. I know you are wondering what this is about as I did when it was proposed.
An overview is: Research shows a trauma-informed, victim centered approach is considered a best practice when investigating sexual assault. Project Beloved partners with law enforcement agencies by providing them with a Soft Interview Room to facilitate a trauma- informed investigation of sexual assault.
The police department here in Denton has available rooms to be set up for this purpose. It will cost approximately $3000 to set one up and the department is hoping to be able to set three up. This room is set up as a den with comfortable chairs, end tables, lamps, etc. This helps to provide a much more relaxed atmosphere as young women (or men) are interviewed.
Some of you may have had experiences either as individuals, or with family or friends. If you have, you know that a setting such as this might help to make a difference in the way that a person feels, as they are asked uncomfortable questions, so that they can provide as much information as is possible.
